Summary

Genesis (Chapter 25 – 50) – Be Authentic
Summary

Isaac, Jacob & Joseph

Authentic Believers

All are made of Clay

Authentic believers are all made of clay

DL Moody …
“When we come to a character like Jacob & we find that God has grace enough to save him, I think there is hope for almost any of us”

God can use frail, flawed people to get His work done

 Authentic believers …
: Accept themselves,
: Dare to trust God to use them in spite of themselves

Though God didn’t approve of their disobedience …
God kept every promise He made to them

Despite the weakness & failures of His children, …
: God is not ashamed to call Himself “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac & the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:6)
: Nor is Jesus ashamed to call us His brethren (Heb 2:11-12)

All are alike
Authentic believers aren’t all alike

Isaac, began well spiritually, plateau then declined …
More concerned about his dinner than doing the will of God

Jacob started badly, went through ups & downs, …
: ended on a higher plane

Joseph’s spiritual life was steady & steadfast …
He lived by faith,
: His faith brought about the salvation of the Jewish nation,
Died in faith

The Christian faith thrives on unity in diversity …
: “One body, many members” (1Cor 12:12)

The 12 apostles were all different

Depend on the Grace of God Authentic believers depend on the Grace of God
Authentic believers pay for their sins & mistakes & learn from them. They learn to depend
on the Grace of God

– For them, life is a school, grace is the teacher …
: They struggle, make progress
: Learn about themselves, their peers & importantly God

Depending on God’s grace means …
: Letting God work in & through us to accomplish the good pleasure of His will

 Satan wants believers to …
Concentrate on their imperfections & failures
Not to understand & experience the grace of God

 Adopt outlook of Joseph …
: “You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good”

Life is like a pilgrimage

Authentic believers know that life is a pilgrimage

Alexander Whyte …
“The victorious Christian life is a series of new beginnings”

Martin Luther …
“This life is not righteousness but growth in righteousness, not health but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing towards it. The process is not yet finished, but it is going on. This is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified”

The patriarchs confess that they were “strangers & pilgrims on earth” (Heb 11:11-13)

 Living like a pilgrim …
Is not about “geography” but of attitude
: Attitude of a traveler not a settler
: Pilgrims do not stand still but make progress …
> New promises to claim
> New enemies to fight
> New territories to gain

Make a Difference
Authentic believers make a difference in their world

All that we are & have comes from God

We are only stewards of all that God gives us

Life is a stewardship to be invested, not spent & wasted

 Question is …
: When we are on our death beds, can we say that we have made a difference for God?

Be faithful stewards, recognize our lives as God’s gift & exercise our stewardship …
: Only then can we make a difference for God
: Remember Mary of Bethany

Type of Christ Finally … become like Jesus Christ
– Interesting that the patriarchal history ends with Joseph

– Joseph typifies Christ

– New Testament Rom 8:28 parallels Old Testament Gen 50:20 …
: Gen 50:20 “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good..”
: Rom 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who
have been called according to his purpose”

– Question is: What is this “good” that God intends for all believers

– The Charismatics defines “good” as health & wealth, the 5 Cs …
: Condominium, Car, Country club, Credit card, Cash

– Romans:29 follows 28 to define what this “good” God intends for us really is…
Romans 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his
Son”

– God intends only for us pursue after one C – Christ

– Goals ultimate purpose for all believers …
: Authentic believers are to become like Christ
