Voices for Revival – Study of Minor Prophets (Post-Exilic Period)
– Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi
Appendix II to the End-Times Chart
‘End-Times’ is a common term. Briefly, it means the study about:
a) End of times,
b) End of history of the world,
c) End of the world.
The technical word is ‘eschatology. Its root word is a Greek word ‘eschatos’, meaning ‘the last’ and ‘logy’ means the study of something.
Zech 12:2-3 (KJV)
A very famous prophecy of End-Times. Amazing prophecy about Jerusalem. Who would believe that Jerusalem which was then in really bad shape/ruins, would be significant enough that one day it would send “all the nations of the earth are gathered against her”. Unbelievable!
For more than 50 yrs, Israel’s neighbours have launched surprise attacks at her and she still won, even though she was outnumbered 50 to 1. Unbelievable!
This tiny nation, with only one one-thousandth of world’s population, occupying a small area, has now occupied one-third of the UN’s time! Unbelievable!
The only reasonable explanation is this: God has prophesized that Jerusalem will be “a cup of trembling” (v2, KJ) and “a burdensome stone” (v3, KJ) to all the nations, and this is sure to happen. Her enemies “shall be cut in pieces” during Tribulation period.
Nation of Israel
The nation of Israel has a very special place in God’s heart. God referred Himself as (Exo 3:15), “I am……the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Issac, and the God of Jacob….this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” God also called Himself “the God of Israel” 203 times in the Bible.
God will not go back on His words to His people. He is faithful to His promises. Despite the Jews’ rejection, disobedience and sinfulness, He loves and remembers them. He has planned to restore them in the future, in the End-Times.
The End-Times Chart
This 2-in-1 Chart shows the following:
1) Top Half: The Dispensational Pre-Millennial View (also called Pre-Millennium & Pre-Tribulation View). Our church believes in this view.
2) Bottom Half: God’s Temples in History and Prophecy.
1) Top Half: The Dispensational Pre-Millennial View
It shows different periods: Age of Israel 1, Church Age, Age of Israel 2, and Messianic Age.
a) Age of Israel 1: Starts from the beginning in Genesis. This includes the Old Testament records of the life and history of the Israelites. It ends with the Church Age.
b) Church Age: We are in this age; we are somewhere here * now. It began in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit came to the believers at Pentecost. It was after Jesus’ ascension to heaven.
c) Rapture: All believers will rapture (1 Thess 5:2-3) and go to heaven; only unbelievers will be left behind. Believers will be rewarded according to their works.
d) Age of Israel 2: With all believers gone to heaven and the complete number of the saved Gentiles (Rom 11:25) have raptured; it is time for God to restore and redeem the Jews again. It is specially for the Jews only; this period is also called Tribulation. It means “the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jer 30:7)
It’s 7 yrs long. The Jews will undergo immense and intense suffering, much more than ever before. But Christ will rescue them at the end of this period at the Battle of Armageddon (Zech 12-14, Rev 16:16). Satan will be locked away for 1000 years.
During this time, the Jews will recognize that Jesus is the Messiah, “the one they have pierced” (Zech 12:10), rejected and crucified. There will be a great outpouring of grief and sorrow, and great repentance. ‘All Israel will be saved’ (Rom 11:26) at this point, all those Jews who survived will be saved, this period is for God to restore the Jews. The 144,000 Jews saved initially in this period will witness to the other Jews, and more Jews will be saved.
e) Messianic Age: The final period in the End-times. The term explains itself. The Age of the Messiah. It includes:
i) Millennium years,
ii) Great White Throne Judgment, and
i) Millennium is 1000 yrs duration.
Christ will set up the Millennial kingdom (Zech 14:9). He will rule with all the saints (Zech 14:5). He “shall sit and rule on the throne” as priest-king (Zech 6:13). He would be worshipped by all nations (Isa 2:1-5). It’s a very different world from what we know now because Satan is locked up.
The Millennium will end dramatically after 1000 yrs. Satan will be released from his prison. He will gather evil forces and fight the final war of Gog and Magog (Rev 20:7-8) against God’s people. “Fire came down from heaven and devoured them” (Rev 20:9). The physical earth will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:10-11)
ii) ‘Great White Throne’ or final judgment (Rev 20): Two books will be opened. The ‘book of life’ contains names of all believers. The second book is a book containing all our good and bad conduct (no specific name given to this book in the Bible).
iii) Eternity: the finale. This is heaven. Believers will be with the Lord forever, there will be no tears, no death, no mourning, and no pain (Rev 21:4). We will be worshipping God.
2) Bottom Half: God’s Temples in History and Prophecies
It shows the time-line of God’s Temples in the past and in the future.
a) Tabernacle: a mobile temple. God revealed to Moses the detailed plan.
b) Solomon’s Temple: The 1st temple. Planned by King David, constructed by Solomon, destroyed by the last Babylonian invasion under King Nebuchadnezzar II in 586 BC. Temple articles and treasures were carried away. It was a very grand and beautiful temple that the Jews are very proud of to this day.
c) Zerubbabel’s Temple: This was the temple that Haggai, Zech and Malachi talked about. Temple treasures were brought back from captivity. As you know, after a promising start in the first and second yr, the building of it was stopped for 16 yrs. Then, it was finally completed during Zech’s time in 516 BC.
About 500 yrs later, it was repaired & extended for about 90 yrs. Under King Herod, it was renamed as the ‘Herod’s Temple’. Jesus was there: he taught, healed, and chased out money-changers (Matt 21:12-17), prophesized that it would be completely destroyed (Matt 24:2). In AD 70, it was completely burnt and destroyed by the Romans. However, this event was never recorded in the Bible. It happened a few years after Paul’s death. But it happened before the death of Apostle John, who wrote epistles of 1, 2 & 3 John and the book of Rev.
d) Present Temple: During Church Age, it is found in the heart of the believer. The body of a believer is the Lord’s temple (1 Cor 6:19, 2 Cor 6:16).
e) Tribulation Temple (Rev 11:1-2): The Jews will build it. In the last 40 yrs, the Temple Mount Faithful groups among the Jews are very keen to build this temple. Another group, the Temple Institute has been restoring and making temple items for the past 20 yrs, all getting ready for this temple.
Anti-Christ will also come to this temple. He will deceive the world into believing he is the true God. (Anti-Christ also means False Christ in Matt 24:4). “He sits as God in the temple of God” (2 Thess 2:4). This greatly angered God. Christ will destroy and defeat him. (2 Thess 2:8). Will the temple be destroyed? No specific mention in the Bible that it will be destroyed although many scholars said so.
f) Millennial Temple: It’s also known as ‘Ezekiel’s Temple’ (Eze 40-42). Christ will build it (Zech 6:12-13) during His millennial reign. Will it be destroyed? Not mentioned specifically in the Bible. 2 Peter 3:10-11 mentions that all physical things will destroy by fire.
g) Eternal Temple: The greatest temple of all. It’s a spiritual temple. “The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” (Rev 21:22).
